Chen Long caused a major upset this weekend by defeating number one seed Lee Chong Wei to win the Yonek Open in Japan.
China’s Long has now won two consecutive OSIM BWF World SuperSeries titles after triumphing in Tokyo, but his win over Malaysia’s Chong Wei was his first win over the top seed since 2009.
On that occasion Chong Wei was suffering from food poisoning, but since then Chen Long has tasted four successive defeats and was not expected to prevent his opponent from winning his seventh title of the year.
Chen Long dominated the first game with some stunning smashes to win it 21-8 only to see Chong Wei hit back to take the second game 21-10.
The decider could have gone either way but it was Chen Long who held his nerve, coming back from 19-18 down to win 21-19 to win back-to-back OSIM BWF World SuperSeries titles for the first time in his career.
Chen Long said: “It’s exciting. I didn’t think about anything during the match. I’m younger and he is strong. I was just lucky to win.”
