Peter Gade and Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat have battled their way into Thursday's second round of the US$350,000 Li Ning China Open.
The two former world No. 1s were pushed all the way on Wednesday, but managed to keep their Olympic Games hopes alive, as the top four seeds qualify for London 2012.
World No. 4 Gade plays Pengyu Du on Thursday, while number eight seed Tuafik takes on compatriot Simon Santoso.
Chinese heavyweights Chen Long (2), Lin Dan (3) and Chen Jin (5) are up against Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, Wing Ki Wong and Zhengming Wang respectively.
In the women's draw, world champion Wang Yihan's passage to Open glory was made slightly easier as three seeded players in her half of the draw bit the dust on Wednesday.
Fourth seed Saina Nehwal, fifth seed Jiang Yanjiao and eighth seed Cheng Shao Chieh all exited after first round defeats.
Yihan plays Ji Hyun Sung of Korea in round two and live streaming of the tournament begins at 06:00 GMT at bet365.
