The EuroBasket 2011 tournament gets underway in Lithuania this week with some of the best countries in the world fighting it out for the ultimate prize.

EuroBasket 2011 is in its 37th year and will be held in Lithuania for the second time in the sports history since the tournament was revamped in 1990. The top two teams in this year’s EuroBasket 2011 will be guaranteed places at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Twenty Four teams will participate in the EuroBasket 2011 after qualifying through different avenues. Lithuania are in the tournament because they are the host nation, while Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey are all included because of their participation in the 2010 FIBA World Championship.
Belgium, Great Britain, Israel, Macedonia and Montenegro all made it through the official qualifying rounds, Bosnia and Herzegovinia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Italy, Latvia, Poland and Ukraine benefited from a FIBA Europe decision, while Finland and Poland came through an additional qualifying round.
