Angola kicked off the defence of their FIBA Africa Championship with a convincing win over a poor Chad outfit.
Angola showed no mercy as it demolished a hapless Chad quintet in their opening Group B match at University of Antananarivo last night. The six-time defending FIBA Africa champions built a 35-17 first-quarter lead and cruised the rest of the way.
Carlos Morais led the Angolans with 25 points and six rebounds. Backing him up was two-time FIBA-Africa Championship MVP Joaquim Gomes, who finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Mickael Koibe was the only Chad player to score in double digits, finishing with 11 points.
In the other Group B game, Senegal dumped Morocco 79-65. Maleye NDoye led the five-time FIBA-Africa champions with 23 points while Malick Badiane posted a double double 14 points and 11 rebounds. Mouhammad Faye also played well for Senegal, chipping in 17 points. Abdelhakim Zouita paced the Moroccans with 19 points.
Over in Group D, Tunisia was relentless in disposing of Togo 103-56. Big man Macram Ben Romdhane powered his way to 20 points and eight rebounds. Jimmy Williams led Togo with a game-high 25 points.
In the other game, the Central African Republic downed Rwanda 89-61. Center James Mays led CAR with 23 points and eight rebounds. Also finishing in double digits are Régis Koundjia, Max Kouguere and veteran Lionel Bomayako. Youngster Cameron Bradley led Rwanda with 10 points while Kenneth Gasana and Robert Thomson had nine apiece.
