Russia faces another stern test in the Eurobasket Women on Saturday as it takes on undefeated Czech Republic in a Group E game in Bydgoszcz.
The Russians started out their Main Round campaign with a 51-62 defeat to Belarus. The game was close in the first half but the Belarusians slowly increased their lead over the Russians starting in the third period.
Belarus took a 10-point lead into the final quarter. Russia trimmed the deficit to seven points but Belarus responded with an 8-0 run to increase its lead to 14 points. The Belarusians were never threatened from thereon as they improved to a 2-1 record in the group.
Maria Stepanova led Russia with 12 points while Elena Danilochkina added 10.
The Czechs, meanwhile, have booked a quarterfinal ticket following their 56-51 victory over Turkey on Thursday. Lubor Blažek's wards dictated the tempo in the fourth quarter and survived a late-game surge by the Turks to secure their third-straight win.
Guard Katerina Elhotova led the way for the Czechs with 19 points while Jana Vesela had 12 points and six rebounds.
