Talk N Text is out to preserve its unbeaten record when it takes on Barako Energy in the Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup today.
The defending champions were impressive in their victories over Meralco (98-80) and Rain or Shine (107-98) despite the absence of key players Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams and Ranidel De Ocampo. TNT head coach Chot Reyes drew big games from Harvey Carey, Jayson Castro and Ryan Reyes in their victory over the Elasto Painters last Sunday. Carey finished with a conference-high 28 points while Reyes and Castro added 19 and 18 points, respectively.
Coach Reyes said the absence of his top three players will definitely affect the team's performance against Barako. “Barako is a deep, tall talented, veteran team that’s getting energized by two excellent rookies,” Reyes told pba.ph. “Without Kelly and Ranidel we don’t have enough bigs to match up so we must find other ways.”
Alapag, Williams and De Ocampo were given extra time off after being loaned to the national team in the recent FIBA-Asia Championship. They will rejoin the team later this week.
Barako, meanwhile, stunned Ginebra 88-75 last Sunday to notch its first win of the season. The Boosters benefited from the brilliant performances of rookies Dylan Ababou and Allein Maliksi as they bounced back from an opening day loss to Petron Blaze.
Former Smart Gilas national team mainstay Ababou fired 20 points in his PBA debut while PBA D-League MVP Maliksi chipped in 13. Veterans Mick Pennisi, Leo Najorda and Paul Artadi also played well for Barako, which snapped a 12-game skid dating back to last season when the club was still known as Air21.
Head coach Junel Baculi welcomes their match-up against another top-caliber club. “Third straight game against another strong team. Defense is the key," he said.
