Wade and Lewis played well into the early hours of Monday morning on another night of high drama at Alexandra Palace.
Wade was leading 2-0 when the controversy struck. There was a heavy breeze coming through to the stage which caused both players to miss crucial doubles. After a lengthy break the players came back on stage and the drama continued to unfold.
The Machine quickly raced into a 5-1 lead and was just one set from reaching the final, but Lewis showed his true champion spirit by hitting back to take the game 6-5 and move closer to retaining his crown.
Wade will be kicking himself that he went off the boil, but Lewis has to be congratulated after winning a stunning 10 legs on the bounce to reach the final.
Lewis will now face fellow Stoke thrower Andy Hamilton after The Hammer also came from behind to see off Australian Simon Whitlock.
Hamilton, who defeated Whitlock in dramatic fashion at the World Matchplay in Blackpool last July, held the advantage in the early stages of the contest as he led 3-1.
However, Whitlock then produced some superb darts to take 12 of the next 14 legs in the process of moving 5-3 ahead.
That put the 2010 runner-up a set away from his second final in the space of three years, but Hamilton, who held pre-tournament odds of 125/1 with sponsors, Ladbrokes, hit back to claim the next three sets to seal an amazing triumph.
