Kicking off the most prestigious event on the BDO calendar are Ron Meuelenkamp and Gary Stone.
Dutchman Meuelenkamp is the slight favourite going into the game, but faces tough opposition in Scotsman Stone.
The main event of the afternoon session sees defending champion Martin Adams take to the stage to begin his campaign for a fourth world title.
He faces 15th seed Scott Mitchell, a dangerous player who is making his third consecutive appearance in the event.
'The Silverbank' Tony O'Shea takes on Steve West at 3:30pm; popular thrower O'Shea has been tipped by many to have a good run this year and will have the backing of the partizan Lakeside crowd on Saturday afternoon.
Experienced thrower Ross Montgomery plays Fabian Roosenbrand in another Scotland versus Holland clash to round off the opening session.
The evening session sees two tasty matches, starting with two England internationals going head-to-head as Robbie Green faces Daryl Fitton.
The game has been billed as the best of the first round and the bookmakers struggle to seperate them both at 5/6.
World number five Gary Robson begins his Lakeside quest against Steve Douglas, who will be out to avenge his defeat to Robson at the same stage of the event last year.
The action gets underway at 1:00pm, with selected matches streamed live from the Lakeside over the best of five sets.
