A fine run in the second half of the season saw Borussia Monchengladbach upset the odds and stave off relegation. They did have to play a playoff with Bochum, from the Bundesliga 2 but Lucien Favre's side came through 2-1 on aggregate to remain in the top flight.
Eintracht Frankfurt and St. Pauli were not so lucky, however, and they will be playing in German football's second tier next term. They will be replaced by Bundesliga 2 champions Hertha Berlin and runners-up FC Augsburg.
