The former Chelsea striker who, along with Daniel Osvaldo, has scored nine Serie A goals this season, will be out for three weeks with a hamstring injury.
The Giallorossi have a few problems within their squad for skipper Francesco Totti is also likely to be absent with a thigh injury, while defenders Juan, Nicolas Burdisso and Marco Cassetti are others on the sidelines.
To compound matters for coach Luis Enrique, former Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze is suspended.
Even so, Roma are hot favourites to win this match against a team who are second from bottom of the table, eight points from safety.
Novara have picked up somewhat recently though after a dreadful January and they have won three of their last six games, including a 1-0 victory at Inter Milan.
Roma won the reverse fixture 2-0 when Osvaldo, the 7/2 favourite to score first here, was among the goals.
