Simpson (7/2
SportingBet) , who could go top of the US Money List, reeled off eight birdies and one bogey on the opening day to finish seven under alongside Miller (50/1
888sport) who made an eagle and five birdies in a bogey-free performance.
Simpson said afterwards: “I got two weeks off so I think, more than anything, I'm just rested and my body is in better shape than (at the TOUR Championship) Atlanta where I was pretty tired.
“That being said, I had a fresh mind and played well, kept the ball in front of me, and I think more than anything, I just kind of took advantage of the holes where I hit it close and birdied the par-5s.
“I didn't quite realise I made eight birdies until the end, but overall it was a pretty easy, breezy day.”
Leading the chasing pack are Scott McCarron, Billy Horschel and Martin Piller after all three men shot six-under-par first rounds. McCarron (50/1
Betfred) and Piller (80/1
SkyBet) both shot eight birdies and two bogeys on the day, while Horschel carded seven birdies and a bogey.
There are no less than 10 players on five-under with the likes of Ben Crane (28/1
bet365), Angel Cabrera (33/1 Ladbrokes) and Louis Oosthuizen (20/1
Paddy Power) shooting 65 of the opening day.
Brian Davis (100/1
Victor Chandler) is two-under following a round consisting of three birdies and one bogey, while fellow Englishman Paul Casey (66/1
SkyBet) is a shot further back after shooting three birdies and two bogeys on Thursday.
Graeme McDowell (90/1 bet365) shot an eagle, three birdies, two double-bogeys and a bogey in his par-70 round, while rising American star Rickie Fowler (150/1
Boylesports) is well down the leaderboard after shooting four bogeys and just one birdies in a three-over-par 73.
