Iceland is favored to beat Slovenia in their final Group D match in the European Handball Championship on Friday.
Iceland stunned Norway 34-32 last night while Slovenia lost to Croatia 29-31 for its second-straight loss in Group D.
The win was significant for Iceland, which lost to Croatia in its opening match. Led by Robert Gunnarsson, the 2008 Beijing Olympics silver medallists raced to an early lead against Norway.
However, the Norwegians caught up and eventually took the lead before the combined efforts of Erlend Mamelund, Einar Riegelhuth Koren and Christoffer Rambo. Iceland continued to struggle and Norway took a two-goal lead at the half.
Norway continued its impressive form after the break and extended its lead to four goals. But Iceland refused to surrender and quickly came back behind the heroics of Alexander Petersson and Aron Palmarsson. The two teams exchanged leads from thereon and the match was as close as it can get heading into the final minutes of play.
Gunnarsson gave Iceland a 31-30 lead with five minutes remaining and Vignir Svavarsson sealed the deal by scoring another goal shortly after. Iceland goalkeeper Bjorgvin Gustavsson also foiled Norway's last-ditch efforts to secure the win for his team.
"This was very good match for Norway, it was difficult and equal," Iceland coach Gudmundur Gudmundsson said.
"We had a lot of problems in defence in the first half, while our attack was on high level for most of the 60 minutes. When we changed some things in second half we returned into the game. At the end we played cleverly and won."
Slovenia, meanwhile, can still qualify to the Main Round despite being winless. But they need to beat Iceland in their final group match and hope that Norway beats Croatia in the other match.
The Slovenians had a gallant stand before losing to neighbor Croatia 29-31 last night. The Croatians built a 10-6 lead early on as the Slovenian missed several golden opportunities.
Slovenia managed to cut Croatia's lead to one goal in the 27th minute but the latter scored three in a row to take a four-goal lead at the break.
The Croatians extended their lead to five goals early in the second half but the Slovenians made a comeback behind the hot shooting of Dragan Gajic to tie the scores at 20-20. However, it was the closest the Slovenians could come close as the much-experienced Croatians regained their composure to finish off their game opponents.
"I must congratulate Croatia and my players who were fighting so hard, their will was enormous," Slovenia coach Boris Denic said.
"We didn’t start too well but found our ways in second half where the defence was on a really high level. The inexperience of our youngsters prevailed today. The game was not important for us, we wanted to play and win but it doesn't matter. We go for victory against Iceland."
