Every year this meeting is heavily attended by members of the Royal Family, including the Queen. Royal Ascot is rated highly on the social calender and the press coverage of the meeting is remarkable with most coverage focusing on what the attendees are wearing rather than the actual racing.
Outside the UK, racing is extremely popular with the Melbourne Cup in Australia seen as the richest two mile handicap race in the world. The Melbourne Cup is marketed as "the race that stops a nation". It is a 3,200 metre race for for horses aged three or over and is staged at the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne with a 1500 local time start on the first Tuesday in November every year.
