Pool is often seen as a pub game but in recent years it has started to strive as a professional sport and has two main formats of the game with eight-ball and nine-ball pool.
Eight-ball pool, or blackball, is the format of pool played in the United Kingdom. In this game there are 16 balls on the table, a cue ball, seven yellows, seven reds and the black ball.
The aim of the game is to pot all your coloured ball (red or yellow) before potting the black to win the game. Some of the rules are very complex and there are actually two versions under the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) and the European Blackball Association banners.
Nine-ball pool in recent years has become the dominant tournament game throughout professional pool.
In nine-ball a legal shot means striking the cue ball into the lowest numbered object ball on the table and subsequently either pocketing an object ball, or driving any ball (including the cue ball) to any rail, otherwise the shot is a foul.
Object balls do not have to be pocketed in numerical order; any ball can be pocketed at any time so long as the lowest-numbered ball is contacted first by the cue ball.
The 9-ball itself can be legally pocketed for a win at any turn in the game, intentionally or by chance, including the break shot.
