Originally named the China International, this event became the first international snooker tournament to be held in China in 1997.
The China International was a non-ranking tournament for the top 16 in the world and local players. The following season the tournament became ranking before being abandoned in 2001.
It was revived for the 2004/05 season though and three local wild-card players were invited to play against qualifiers.
China's Ding Junhui received a wild-card invitation and went on to win the tournament, however as a wild-card entry he couldn't claim prize money or ranking points.
The tournament is held at the Beijing University Students Gymnasium and is the last ranking event before the World Championship.
