In all, 32 matches will be played across eight hours of chaotic snooker in the Blackpool Tower venue.
There were no real upsets on opening night as ten top 16 players booked their place in the next round.
There were early exits however for Judd Trump, who lost to John Higgins in a repeat of their world final, and Jimmy White, who ran into an emphatic Anthony Hanmilton.
A new name is guaranteed to be etched onto the trophy come Sunday night, as Nigel Bond lost out in the curtain raiser to Robert Milkins, who gained revenge for his defeat to the veteran in last year's final.
Saturday's action features a host of top players including Ding Junhui, Shaun Murphy, seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry and recent Masters champion Neil Robertson.
Young stars Jack Lisowski, Ben Woollaston and Michael White will get a taste of the TV lights and will be out to make a name for themselves in the ten minute shot clock event.
The evening session sees the full set of Last 32 matches to be played, with the open draw being carried out following the completion of the Last 64.
