Snooker is played as a cue-sport on a large green baize-covered table and the aim of the game is to pot enough balls to get a higher score than your opponent.
The game is played using one white cue ball, 15 reds worth a points each and then six coloured balls - yellow (2 points), green (3), brown (4), blue (5), pink (6) and black (7). Once a red is potted you have to then attempt to pot a colour until all the reds have been potted then you clear up the colours in sequence.
The sport of snooker is governed by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) and was founded in 1968. The organisation is based in Bristol, England and organises all the tournaments on their calendar.
Two of the major tournaments in snooker that are streamed live are the Premier League Snooker and the Players Tour Championshop.
The Premier League campaign takes place in different venues around the country every Thursday from September to December and features the 10 best players in the world.
The 2011 Premier League season has seen reigning champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Williams, John Higgins, Ding Junhui, Neil Robertson, Ali Carter, Shaun Murphy, Judd Trump, Matthew Stevens and Jimmy White all take part.
The winner of the Premier League Snooker competition collects £60,000 in prize money, while the runner-up will receive £30,000.
The two losing semi-finalists will then collect £20,000 each.
The Players Tour Championship is a separate tournament which starts midweek with a number of qualifying matches before the big names come in over the weekend.
The PTC series sees 12 short events played earlier in the season, six in the UK and six in Europe.
Players are ranked on an Order of Merit according to how much money they won, with the top 24 on the final Order of Merit going through to the Grand Final, providing they had played in at least three events in the UK and three elsewhere.
