The opening day of the competition saw wins for snooker legend Steve Davis, who beat Ali Carter, Ding Junhui, Michael Holt, Judd Trump and defending champion John Higgins.

Local favourite Mark Williams begins his campaign today at 1300 GMT against Andy Hicks, the first time these two have met for 15 years. Hicks recorded three creditable wins to qualify for the first round proper, including a 4-1 defeat of Anthony Hamilton in which he compiled a 142 break.

Mark King is up against fellow Essex star Stuart Bingham at 1400. Bingham comes into the match with the pressure off having already secured his top 16 place, he also has a 5-0 head-to-head advantage over his compatriot.

Peter Ebdon takes on Martin Gould in the evening session at 1900, and having won just two of his last 10 competitive matches the former world champion will no doubt attempt to grind out a result as is his style.
