Australia finished runners-up in Pool C after crashing to defeat to a resilient Ireland side, but they managed to advance thanks to wins over Italy, USA and Russia, while the Springboks eventually ran away with Pool D with convincing wins over Fiji, Namibia and Samoa after they were pushed all the way in their opening clash with Wales.
Australia entered the tournament as second favourites and despite their shock defeat against the Irish they still remain there and can be backed at 7/1 (
Ladbrokes) to lift the World Cup on October 23.
The Springboks have been hurt with the loss of the influential Frans Steyn and that may be reflected in the betting odds as they are 11/10 (
Bet365) to be victorious in Wellington.
The Wallabies were hurt by that defeat by Ireland and have looked determined to put that right by going all the way and their determination as seen them installed as even money favourites to set up a semi-final tie against New Zealand or France with
Stan James.
Despite the bookmakers backing Australia to knock out the defending World Champions at the quarter-final stage it is not by much and you can take South Africa at even money with a 1 point start.
Both countries are capable of scoring tries to help rack up the points but in a quarter-final they are likely to play it safe in order to remain in the game and you can back Australia at 4/5 (
Paddy Power) to be the first team to notch up 10 points, with nearly all of them coming from penalties or drop goals.
Expect tries to be at an all time low and it would benefit you to back the 3.5 or less market with
Sportingbet offering odds of 3/4.
This will not be a walkover win for any team and any points will be important and keeping the lead throughout the match will be key, but it is never that simple Bet365 are offering odds of 18/1 that the score will be level at the break with Australia taking the spoils at full-time.
