Wildcard Kei Nishikori of Japan stunned world number one Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Swiss Indoors at Basel on Saturday to set up a final encounter with Roger Federer today.
Djokovic lost 2-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-0 to the world number 32 and rising star, but was nursing a shoulder injury which didn't help his cause.
It was a fantastic result for the Japanese player though, who became only the second man - after today's opponent - to beat Djokovic in a completed match this year. The Serb has lost only four matches in 2011, and two of those came as a result of retirements.
Roger Federer prevailed in the other semi, an all-Swiss affair with Stanislas Wawrinka, earning a place in the final of his hometown tournament.
After a close first set, the world No. 4 took control of the match, and he eventually left the court with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory.
In a post match interview, Federer said, "He's a guy I've never played against. My focus will be to remember how he plays. He beat Novak in the semis, so he'll have a shot in the final. He has great shots, a quick arm and is a fighter.”
"He was injured a lot and wasn't able to rise in the rankings like he was capable of. But he made the semi-finals in Shanghai and now the final here, so he's taken advantage of his chances."
