Indian Wells is the first Masters 1000 event of 2012 and the world's best players will be gathering for an intense fortnight in the Californian desert.
Indian Wells was the location where we all suddenly realised something very special was happening for Novak Djokovic in 2011. The Serb was gathering momentum and he achieved one of the most important psychological victories of his career when he finally beat Rafa Nadal in a major final. It was a huge breakthrough for Djokovic and twelve months on, Nadal is still searching for answers.
The dry desert air provides conditions which suit the more adventurous players and we may see something special from the likes of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Tomas Berdych or even Milos Raonic this week. Aussie eyes will be centered on the fast improving Bernard Tomic who will be looking to make an impact in a Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career.
In the women's draw, Caroline Wozniacki will be defending her title but the Indian Wells climate could be to the liking of Petra Kvitova. The balls really fly at this event and as long as the wind doesn't get up too much, the Czech will love that with her big serve and forehand.
Meanwhile former champion Kim Clijsters will be paying an emotional last visit to the event as she plans to retire in August.
