Andy Murray has ruled himself out of the ATP World Tour Finals because of his groin injury.
The Scot, who had lost to David Ferrer in the first match that he played in the ATP WTF 2011, struggled with his groin problem in that encounter. Ninth ranked player in the world, Serbian Janko Tipsarevic will now take his place in the tournament.
Murray now has a break of around six weeks before he plays his next tournament, the Brisbane International in early January next year.
Murray said, "Yesterday I was really unhappy on the court. I wasn't enjoying it at all. This is one of the best tournaments in the year, one that I think me and all of the players look forward to playing.
He also explained that it would only worsen his condition if he played on in the tournament and that aggravating the injury with an eye at the Australian Open was the reason for his decision to pull out.
He added, "I never want to pull out of tournaments, especially one of this size. But it's a decision I kind of had to make because I was probably going to do myself more damage.”
This will now mean that Tipsarevic will play Tomas Berdych in today’s match at the ATP WTF in London.
