13-seeded American Andy Roddick defeated Julien Benneteau in straight sets to enter the round of 16 in the Paris Masters 2011.
Roddick snatched a break of serve in the first set and closed out the first set 6-4. But he was broken early in the second set by the resurgent Benneteau.
Roddick broke right back before taking a 4-3 lead. Then, Benneteau and Roddick held their respective serves, which meant that the Frenchman ranked 52 in the world, needed to hold his service to give himself a chance.
However, at 30-30, an unforced error from Benneteau gave Roddick the match-point, which he immediately converted to win the match in straight sets. Roddick won 6-4, 6-4 in a match that lasted 82 minutes
Earlier, Benneteau had taken out Milos Raonic in the first round while Roddick had received a bye in the first round.
Roddick could now play Andy Murray in the third round, if the second-seeded Scotsman can put across Jeremy Chard in his second round match at the Paris Masters 2011. Chardy won his first set 6-3 against Marcel Granollers, before his opponent had to retire due to a fitness issue. Murray had a first round bye.
Murray’s best performance at the Paris Masters is the quarter-final stage, that he has got to on three separate occasions.
