Caroline Wozniacki has lost her world number one ranking after crashing out in the Australian Open quarter-finals to Kim Clijsters.
Ahead of the match, few were giving Clijsters much chance after she twisted her ankle during her epic fourth round win over Li Na on Sunday. However the Belgian looked none the worse for wear against Wozniacki and withstood a second set fightback to clinch a 6-3, 7-6 win.
Once again Wozniacki paid the penalty for her passive play on the key points, all too willing to let Clijsters dictate play. The Dane has been looking to be more aggressive throughout this tournament but when will she realise that she needs to step it up against the best in the world on the big occasions ?
However Wozniacki remains convinced her time will eventually come. "I start laughing every time because the media talks to me like I'm finishing my career and I only have one year left and time is running out," she said.
"The fact is I still have quite a few good years in front of me. I still improve. I still have a number of Australians and a number of US Opens and Wimbledons and French Opens left. I will definitely do my best and try to win one or even more. In the end of the day, you can just do your best. You can't do anything more than that."
"To be honest, I don't really think about it (losing the number 1 ranking). I have been there for a long time already. I finished No. 1 two years in a row. In the end of the year we will see who played the best. We are just in January. In the end of the year you see who has played the best, most consistently all year-round."
