Chinese Taipei’s Chen Ti plays eighth-seeded Japanese Yuichi Sugita in the quarter-final of the ATP’s McDonald’s Burnie International tennis Challenger tournament.
Ti entered the quarter-final with a couple of straight-set wins. In the first round, he overcame a sluggish start to defeat Canada’s Eric Chvojka before sending out Slovakia’s Kamil Capkovic in the second round.
While Ti defeated Chvojka 7-5, 6-4, he beat his Slovakian opponent in the second match, 6-3, 7-5 to make it to the last-eight stage.
Sugita did not encounter too many difficulties from his first round opponent, John-Patrick Smith, as he went on to win 6-3, 6-3. However, in the second round, the eighth-seeded Japanese needed three sets to defeat Zhang Ze of China. Sugita won his place in the quarter-finals with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win.
The two players have played each other once before this match and that was in 2007. Chen had managed to get the better of Sugita, winning 6-2, 4-0 (before the Japanese player retired because of an injury).
The Chen Ti v Japanese Yuichi Sugita quarter-final match at the McDonald’s Burnie International tournament will be played on February 2.
