Federer has now featured in the past eight grand slam finals, an incredible record though his achievement of making the semi-finals in every grand slam dating back to the 2004 French Open is almost beyond belief.

When it comes to best of five sets it takes a special performance to defeat Federer and Murray did not even come close when they last met on a stage this big, Federer sweeping to a straight sets victory in the 2008 US Open final and the Swiss has not been shy of reminding Murray about that during the build-up to the final.

However Murray definitely knows how to give Federer problems on the court as his 6-4 winning head-to-head record over the Swiss testifies. His form in this tournament has been nothing short of outstanding and he will be confident of turning in a much better performance then in New York.

Several things have improved in the Murray game since they last met in the ATP World Finals in November. Murray’s second serve is more pacy and varied so Federer will not be able to attack it at will as he has done in the past. Not only that but Federer will probably face a much more aggressive Murray with new confidence in his ability to attack with forehands.
The biggest question will be whether Murray can break through the mental barrier of the first grand slam win. It is a sizeable hurdle and with possibly the greatest player in the history of the game on the other side of the net, overcoming it will be the biggest test of his career.
