Sharapova, who reached the top spot in women’s tennis by getting to the French Open final, will be gunning for a Career Slam. She has won each of the other Grand Slam titles once – Wimbledon in 2004, US Open in 2006 and Australian Open in 2008 – but never progressed beyond the semi-final at the French Open before.
Against her will be Italy’s world number 24, Errani, who is a surprise entrant into the French Open final this year. Unlike Sharapova, who has won all her matches in straight sets, Errani needed three sets to overcome Casey Dellacqua in the first round, Ana Ivanovic in the third and Samantha Stosur in the semi-finals.
In the process, she beat Ivanovic who is ranked 14th in the world, Angelique Kerber, the world number 10 and Stosur, who is sixth ranked.
In the other French Open final which will be played on Sunday, top seeded Novak Djokovic plays second seed Rafael Nadal. Both notched up straight-set victories in the semi-finals, but while Nadal had been doing that all tournament, Djokovic was coming off two successive five-setters.
Nadal will go into the French Open final as favourite on a surface where he is almost invincible. It remains to be seen whether Djokovic has any aces in the pack to surprise the world number two.
