Ninth seeded Juan Martin del Potro will take on world number 20 Kei Nishikori in the third round at Wimbledon 2012 on Saturday.

After defeating Mikhail Kukushkin in straight sets in the first round of the competition, Nishikori did not need too much time on court in the second round. The Japanese player beat Florent Serra 6-3 7-5 6-2 to make it to the third round of the competition.

This equals Nishikori’s best performance at Wimbledon after he had made it to the third round in last year’s Championships as well.

Facing him in the third round will be Argentina’s del Potro, who had earlier overcome another Japanese player, Go Soeda to enter the third round. In his opener, del Potro needed a four-setter against Dutchman Robin Haase, winning 6-4 3-6 7-6(3) 7-5.

Del Potro has played Nishikori twice before this and the Argentine has won both those encounters. One of them was at the 2008 US Open before they met again at San Jose in 2009. The Argentine should be favourite to trump his opponent to make it to the fourth round.

The Kei Nishikori v Juan Martin del Potro match is the second at Court 1 with the first to begin at 1 pm.
