All that was needed was a win for Petra Kvitova in the first reverse singles rubber against Sabine Lisicki of Germany. Kvitova had been tested on Saturday by Julia Goerges, whilst Sabine Lisicki had suffered a shock loss against Iveta Benesova.
On Sunday, Kvitova struggled initially, losing the first set. She fought back in the second, and left the court with a 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-1 win, adding another match to her incredible indoor winning streak in the process. This victory put the defending champions through to the next round.
“Yeah, I mean I had trouble with my return at the beginning and it was really a long time when I know what I had to do,” explained Kvitova after her win. It was in the middle of the second set so I’m happy that I got it and I knew how I can return her serve. She played very well and I’m really happy that we have three points already.”
Lisicki was gracious in defeat, stating, “I think Petra played better in the big points. It was a very close match and I’m happy that I played way better than yesterday. So I’m a little bit proud that I came out today and played a lot better.”
The Czech Republic will now take on either Italy or the Ukraine in the semi-finals.
