Andy Murray and David Ferrer will meet in the ATP Shanghai Masters final with Murray poised to move to world number three if he wins.
Murray is poised to move back up to world number three, overtaking Roger Federer in the rankings, if he can defend his Shanghai Masters title on Sunday. The Brit has had a fairly comfortable path through the draw.
Stanislas Wawrinka gave him a few problems on but since then he's dispatched Matthew Ebden and Kei Nishikori with ease.
"It would be nice to finish the year off No. 3 if I can because that would be the highest ranking I finished at," Murray said. "It's not the ultimate goal, but it's a step in the right direction... I can't really finish as the No. 2 or 1. So it's just a goal I had for the end of the month."
Ferrer has found things tougher but it's still been a superb effort from the Spaniard to reach a second Masters Series final of the season, after Monte Carlo in April. He did not serve at all well in Tokyo last week and Murray beat him very comfortably there but he's raised his game to see off Andy Roddick and Feliciano Lopez in three sets.
However Ferrer has never won a Masters Series event with Rafael Nadal regularly foiling him in the final of some of the biggest clay-court events on the calendar.
He has also never beaten Murray on either indoor or outdoor hard courts. Murray won easily when they met indoors at the ATP World Tour Finals last year and also edged the biggest match they've ever contested - that Australian Open semi-final in January.
