The WTA Tour is the women’s equivalent and the format had a restructure in 2009 which saw Premier Tournaments replace the previous Tier 1 and Tier 2 events, while International Tournaments were brought in instead of Tier 3 and Tier 4 competitions.
The four Grand Slams, same as the men’s, remain an integral part of the WTA Tour.
The Premier Events are split into three categories with Premier Mandatory staging four combined tournaments with the men for equal prize money in Indian Wells, Key Biscayne, Madrid and Beijing.
The next category sees the Premier Five, which is five events worth $2million in Dubai, Rome, Toronto, Montreal and Tokyo.
The final category is just Premier and that sees 10 events worth between $600,000 to 1million in US dollars.
The International Tournaments that were introduced in 2009 see 31 tournaments take place throughout the season with the prize money set at $220,000 US dollars, apart from the end of year Commonwealth Bank Tournament in Bali which has a total fund of $600,000.
Novak Djokovic from Serbia is currently ranked world number one on the ATP Tour, with Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray making up the top four. Federer's fine end to the season thanks to his success at the ATP Tour Finals saw him leapfrog Murray into third.
