Serena Williams is in action this week and is heavily backed to take home the WTA Cincinnati Western and Southern Open title.
Williams has returned with a vengeance this summer, sweeping all before her to win titles in Stanford and Toronto. She seems to have rediscovered her zest for the game during his long layoff, something which can only bode well for women's tennis. Rarely has Serena ever appeared so driven and determined outside of the slams.
It's a good thing for the WTA Tour particularly as most of the other star names seem to have dropped off the radar for one reason or another.
Venus Williams is out with a virus until the US Open while Kim Clijsters is still stricken by the abdominal injury she suffered in Toronto and is only a maybe to defend her title at Flushing Meadows.
Caroline Wozniacki was winning title after title this time last year but the Dane is completely out of form this time and will surely lose her world number one ranking soon. The same can be said for world number three Vera Zvonareva who has also had a very disappointing season.
Na Li and Petra Kvitova are both struggling with the comedown blues after winning their maiden slams earlier this summer. Both looked very ordinary in Toronto and it will be a surprise to see them feature strongly this week.
Instead the ones to watch out for are Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska who have been racking up the points on the hard courts this summer. Sam Stosur made the Toronto final but could face a rematch against Serena as early as the second round this week.
