Australia completed an easy innings and 68 runs win over India in the second Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
India’s task at the start of the day was to bat the day out and then try and bat another day on Saturday. Unfortunately for them, they lost wickets at steady intervals and despite half-centuries from Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and later R Ashwin, they were bowled out for 400.
Tendulkar missed out on scoring his 100th international century again as got out for 80 to Michael Clarke. He now has not scored an international century since March 2011, although it must be added that he hasn’t played in an ODI since the end of the World Cup in April.
Laxman scored 66 while Ashwin managed to put up a sterling fight in the end as he scored 62. Apart from the fourth wicket stand of 103 runs between Tendulkar and Laxman, there wasn’t much of note for India.
Ben Hilfenhaus scalped five wickets, to take his match tally to eight in what is turning out to be an amazing comeback to the side. Clarke’s tripe century earlier won him the man-of-the-match award.
Australia have now taken a 2-0 lead in the series and with two more games to play need only one draw from the remaining matches to regain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.
India now will need to look at their team composition for the third of four Test matches against Australia which will be played at the WACA in Perth. The third Australia v India Test match will begin from January 13.
