Mumbai Indians are the defending champions, while Chennai Super Kings and the New South Wales Blues have both won the tournament once apiece. Trinidad and Tobago (2009), Warriors (2010) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (2011) were all losing finalists in the three seasons of the Champions League T20.

The top clubs from all over the cricketing world participate in the Champions League T20. India, Australia and South Africa are the stake-holders in the competition organisation with India holding half of the stake.

Cricket clubs from India, Australia, South Africa, England, West Indies, Sri Lanka and New Zealand participate in the Champions League T20 tournament. There were four sides from India in the previous edition, with South Africa, Australia and England contributing two teams apiece. One team from West Indies, Sri Lanka and New Zealand also made it to the qualifiers last season.

Every alternate year, the tournament is held in India. This suggests that in 2012, the tournament could be held away from India, either in Australia or South Africa. South Africa have already hosted the competition in 2010.

The Champions League T20 dates and schedule for 2012 is yet to be released.
