A Historical View:
Chennai Super Kings suffered from a stunning loss last game at the hands of the Kings XI Punjab after it had looked all the time that they had had the match covered. Punjab collapsed to 156 all out in that game after a bright start before Chennai collapsed from 62/1 to 149/8 in their 20 overs.
Kolkata Knight Riders also played on the same day and got the better of Royal Challengers Bangalore thanks to a superb effort from Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir nearly made a century and it was one of the best efforts in conditions that suited slow bowling more than anywhere else.
The Super Kings have an excellent record against the Knight Riders, having won five of the seven games played against each other. A win here will push Chennai to third spot at par with Kolkata’s 11 points while if the Knight Riders win they will be a point short of Delhi at the top.
Kolkata will not want to tinker with a winning line-up but there is a possibility of Shakib al Hasan making it to the eleven, much like he was expected to play back home. The humidity and heat at Chennai could make life difficult for quick bowler Brett Lee and Shakib may be used as a replacement.
The rest of them should remain the same, with Gambhir to partner Brendon McCullum at the top. McCullum was showing some form with the bat last game and will hope to continue smashing them around.
Interestingly, Iqbal Abdulla was selected in the playing 11 last game but did not bowl a single over. He will hope to get a game and bowl!
Chennai will not be happy with their middle-order performance and as well as they bowled, they need some beefing up of the batting. One of the three, Dwayne Bravo, Albie Morkel or Nuwan Kulasekara could give way to a pure batsman, although it needs to be seen whether skipper MS Dhoni wants that to happen.
One isn’t sure whether Michael Hussey, who would have reached India after playing in three Tests in the Caribbean, is fit enough to join the playing 11. If he is, Hussey should be an automatic choice in the playing 11.
