The next edition of cricket's biggest Test match rivalry, the Ashes will be played in 2013 in England.
England will go into the series needing only a drawn result to retain the urn while Australia will need to win the series in order to relinquish the Ashes. The five-match series will be played at Lord’s, Old Trafford, Trent Bridge, Riverside Ground at Chester-le-Street and the Oval.
Interestingly, the next edition of the Ashes will be followed immediately by another such series in the same year in Australia. This has been so arranged in order to take the Australia-England series away from being held in the same year as the 50-over cricket World Cup.
Earlier, there was a buzz that the Ashes could be played in 2012 but with the Olympics to be played in London this year, the two cricket boards have taken a decision to have back-to-back Ashes in 2013.
In the previous Ashes played in Australia in 2010-11, England had won the series 3-1 after the first Test match at Brisbane was drawn. England had gone into that Ashes after having won the previous one 2-1 at home in 2009. Of the last four Ashes series, Australia have won only one while England have triumphed in the remaining three.
Australia’s sole win came in the 2006-07 Ashes series, which was also a swansong for the likes of Shane Warne and Glen McGrath. They had gone on to win that series 5-0.
We will update you with the Ashes 2013 schedule as soon as it is announced.
