The CEV Champions League is considered to be the best club competition in Volleyball with 24 teams fighting it out for the ultimate prize.
The CEV Champions League or Indesit European Champions League is classed as the top official competition for men and women’s European Volleyball and is held every year.
The format for the men’s competition sees 24 teams take part in the first round and they are shared into six groups.
After collecting points in the first round the best two teams in each group and the top third places advance to a knockout round to find out the Final Four.
The Final Four then lock horns in March to see who will be crowned CEV Champions League title winners.
The first ever Champions League tournament was held in the 1959-60 season with CSKA Moscow taking home the prize victory over Romanian side Rapid Bucuresti.
CSKA Moscow are classed as the most dominant force in men’s Champions League Volleyball as they have managed to pick up a record 13 titles, their last coming in 1991, while their closet challengers are Pallavolo Modena and Sisley Teviso with four titles each.
The Women’s Champions League is an almost identical format to the men’s competition but they start with 20 teams in the opening round rather than 24 and they are separated into five groups.
The first ever Women’s Champions League tournament was staged in the 1960-61 season with Russian side Dynamo Moscow getting the better of Polish outfit AZS Warsaw.
Dynamo Moscow have picked up the Women’s Champions League title on 11 occasions with their last coming in 1977, while Italian side Volley Bergamo are the team to stop at the moment after picking up two title victories in the last three years.
