Eczacibasi Istanbul and Vakifbank Istanbul showdown in CEV Women's Champions League Playoffs 12
The Istanbul derby in the CEV Women's Champions League Playoffs 12 unfolds on Thursday with Eczacibasi hosting defending champion Vakifbank.
Eczacibasi finished second to Cannes in Pool A with 10 points. The Turkish club ended the League Round with a 3-2 win over Schweriner SC. However, they lost to Fenerbahce 1-3 in their last domestic league match.
Vakifbank, meanwhile, topped Pool D with 14 points. They ended the group stage with successive wins over Azerrail Baki (3-2), Tomis Constana (3-0) and Bergamo (3-1).
"Last year we played Vakifbank in the Playoffs 6 and they eventually qualified for the final four," Eczacibasi's Italian coach Lorenzo Micelli said.
"Since we have been playing each other quite many times in the European Cups, in the national league as well as in the national cup, we know our respective strengths and weaknesses. We believe in our chances as we want to continue our campaign to be finally crowned Europe’s champions later in March."
