The European Volleyball Championship is a national competition for both men and women which is held by the CEV every two years.
The first ever men’s tournament was staged in Italy in 1948 with Czechoslovakia taking home the Gold medal with France and Italy taking Bronze and Silver respectively.
Russia currently lead the way in the overall rankings table after taking out at total of 20 medals - 12 Gold, three Silver and five Bronze, while Italy are next in line with 11 medals after winning six Gold, three Silver and two Bronze.
The first ever women’s tournament was held a year later than the men’s in Czechoslovakia with the Soviet Union taking the Gold, while the host nation grabbed Silver with Poland picking up the Bronze medal.
Just like in the men’s format Russia are again the dominant force in the women’s European Volleyball Championship and they sit top of the table with 24 medals after taking home17 Gold, four Silver and three Bronze.
Next in line behind the Russians are Germany with 10 medals, they have so far collected two Gold, five Silver and three Bronze.
