The FIVB Swatch World Tour Morocco Open is well underway with the top five teams already through to the main draw.
Action got underway this week with 32 teams from 20 different countries to compete in the first ever World Tour event in Morocco.
Switzerland duo and top seeds Martin Laciga and Jonas Weingart opened up with a hard win over Italy’s Matteo Cecchini and Raffaele Cionna (33rd), before showing their true form with a win over Czech Republic pairing of Jan Dumek and Martin Tichy.
Sweden’s Stefan Gunnarson and Hannes Brinkborg only needed four sets to advance to the main draw. The second seeded team first eliminated home team Abdelillah Akazou and Mostapha Hamsi, then did the same with Ukraine’s Mykola Babich and Oleksandr Ioisher .
Also advancing to the main draw were the Italian twins Matteo and Paolo Ingrosso (3rd seeded) and Jason Lochhead and Kirk Pitman (4th) from New Zealand.
The FIVB Swatch World Tour Morocco Open will take place in Agadir this week until Sunday October 9.
The semi-finals and medal matches will be played Sunday as the winning pairs in each gender share the $30,000 first-place prizes.
The Morocco Open will be the 271st men’s event on the FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour.
