The FIVB World Championship is the oldest and most important international indoor volleyball event in the history of the sport and is not to be mistaken for the FIVB World Cup of FIVB World League and FIVB World Grand Prix.
The tournament is run by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) and they are the international governing body for the sport of volleyball and are based in Switzerland.
The history of the FIVB World Championship goes back to the start when volleyball became a professional sport. One of the first rules the FIVB made after being founded in 1947 was to organise an international tournament involving teams from more than one continent.
The first ever World Championship took place in 1949 in Prague, Czechoslovakia and was a men’s only tournament that was just restricted to Europe.
Three years later the women’s version was introduced and ran alongside the men’s format with Asia, South, Central and North America eventually added to the mix.
Over the years volleyball and the World Championship in particular has gained in reputation and with 24 teams taking part this tournament is seen as the second most important volleyball competition in existence with only the Olympic Games surpassing it.
Soviet Union were proud winners of the opening two tournaments in the men’s format in 1949 and 1952 first taking Gold in Czechoslovakia and then their second title on home soil.
In the early year’s of the FIVB World Championship it was the European teams that dominated the tournament with the Soviet Union (Russia) winning six of the first 10 competitions, while Czechoslovakia, Germany and Poland also got involved with the Gold medals.
It has only been until recently that the European teams have been pegged back a little bit with Brazil winning three on the trot in 2002, 2006 and 2010.
In the women’s event the first tournament was staged in the Soviet Union in 1952 with the host nation taking home the Gold medal, while Poland and Czechoslovakia were awarded Silver and Bronze respectively.
In the women’s section again it is Russia who are leading the way with 13 medals altogether after collecting seven Gold, two Silver and four Bronze, while Japan are in second place with three Gold, three Silver and one Bronze.
Russia once won three FIVB World Championship titles on the run from 1952 until 1960, while China managed two on the run in 1982 and 1986 as did Cuba in 1994 and 1998.
