With just four matches remaining at the FIVB Men's Volleyball World Cup, USA will attempt to keep their slim hopes of reaching the podium and securing a 2012 Olympic Games berth alive when they play hosts Japan today.
USA are 3-4 for the tournament on nine points and have lost to the top three sides Poland, Russia and Italy. They the trail third placed Italians by eight points.
Japan meanwhile, have just two victories to their name though have now won two matches in a row after starting the third round with a win over Egypt.
For the North Americans, Matthew Anderson has added 83 points and will pose a seriuous threat to Japan, while the Japanese dangerman is Kunihiro Shimizu, who leads his side in scoring with 110 points.
In head-to-heads USA holds the advantage over Japan at 28-9.
