The quarter-finals of the El Gouna International Squash takes place on Wednesday with Nick Matthew and James Willstrop both eyeing spots in the semi-finals.
The second round of the El Gouna International took place on Tuesday with one major upset as the unseeded Hisham Ashour from Egypt ended 10 years of defeats as he dumped out his fellow countryman Amr Shabana.
Ashour upset the odds by picking up a 13-11 9-11 11-9 11-8 win in 48 minutes to set up a quarter-final tie against current world number one Nick Matthew.
Matthew booked his place in the last eight with a hard-fought and nerve wracking 9-11 14-12 11-6 11-6 victory over Cairo player Mohd Ali Amwar.
Matthew said: “That lasted a bit longer that I expected. Tonight we were both playing well in patches – I was playing three or four points quite well, then he would. But we didn’t seem to find a real momentum throughout.”
Fellow Englishman, Willstrop, who is ranked number two in the world will take on Holland’s Laurens Jan Anjema for a place in the last four.
Willstrop qualified for the quarter-final stage with a 14-12 11-2 11-7 straight sets win over India’s Saurav Ghosal in just under an hour, while Anjema picked up an 11-7 8-11 11-9 11-7 triumph in 70 minutes against Tarek Momen from Egypt.
The other two quarter-finals taking place on Wednesday will see Mohamed El Shorbagy go up against Karim Darwish and Ramy Ashour take on the talented Gregory Gaultier from France.
