France and Slovenia duel in the European Handball Championship Main Round today.
The French will start their Group II campaign with no point while the Slovenians have two.
Defending champion France barely made it to the next phase of the tournament. They began their Group C campaign with a 26-29 defeat to Spain. They rebounded with a 28-24 victory over Russia in their next match only to lose to Hungary 23-26 in their final group game.
"We’re sad about the loss, we have faced lots of difficulties, but had a good phase in the second half where we were in the lead. Hungary came back and with their power and the amazing atmosphere in the hall, they turned the game, so congratulations to them," France coach Claude Onesta said.
The Slovenians are the happier team at the start of this phase. They lost their opening Group D match to Norway 27-28 and bowed to Croatia 29-31. Given up for dead, they defied the odds by stunning Iceland 34-32 in their final group match.
Thus, Slovenia forced a three-way tie and even emerged as the second-ranked team in the group by virtue of a superior goal difference. Iceland placed third while Norway slipped to fourth spot and was eliminated.
"They put their heart into the game and won. We played for ourselves and not for others," Slovenia center back Uros Zorman said.
"We wanted to win by 10 goals but at the end we are happy with the victory that takes us to the Main Round - we fulfilled our goal."
