Carla Suarez Navarro breezed through to the semi-finals of the Estoril Open on Thursday, defeating compatriot Silvia Soler-Espinosa in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. The Spaniard is unseeded here, but now finds herself in a very good position from which to make a title challenge.
“Yesterday I played only 40 minutes while Sílvia played more than two hours, so maybe it was tougher for her to play today,” commented Suarez Navarro after progressing to the final four. “But I'm happy to be in the semifinals. We are friends so it was not easy to play.”
Suarez Navarro will now meet world No. 133 Karin Knapp. Knapp has been a surprise star this week, though we perhaps shouldn’t be too surprised by her success. The Italian is a former world No. 35.
“I had a heart problem and then knee surgery, so a lot of problems,” said Knapp, discussing some of the setbacks that she’s faced in her tennis career.
“I'm working really differently than I was before, so doing well again is confirmation that what I've been doing is working. I came here just to play qualies and now I'm in the semis. It's really exciting. I was excited to stay out and fight today. It was really good emotions to win.”
