In form Juan Martin Del Potro will be a serious dark horse at the Madrid Masters this week and he takes on Florian Mayer in the opening round.
Del Potro was simply brilliant in Estoril last week, storming through the field without dropping a set and defeating opponents of the quality of Richard Gasquet and Stanislas Wawrinka. It bodes very well for the Argentine's aims of getting back in the top ten over the next couple of months and remember, he's a former French Open semi-finalist and if he'd won his five set clash with Roger Federer three years ago, he may well have won the title that year.
This week he's seeded tenth and he has a tough draw with experienced Russian Mikhail Youzhny awaiting the winner of this one in round two.
Mayer himself is currently ranked 24 and is among the top seeds at most events he plays. However the German's form has been dire recently, he's lost his last four matches - crashing out in the first round of small ATP 250 events like Casablanca and Bucharest.
Del Potro fans will be looking ahead to a possible third round clash with the Argentine and the equally in form John Isner who is enjoyed a brilliant 2012 season and is seeded eighth this week.
Mayer has given Del Potro problems in the past and they're locked at 2-2 on the head-to-head but given the German's recent struggles it's hard to see past a Del Potro win in straight sets.
