Laura Pous-Tio has managed to make it through to the final of the WTA Fes Open this week despite being unseeded. The Spaniard had been pitted against Mathilde Johansson in the final four, and prevailed despite losing the second set. Johansson hadn’t won a WTA match in 2012 prior to the start of the week, and her return to winning ways finally ended on Saturday as she fell to a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 loss.
Pous-Tio will now meet Kiki Bertens in the final. Bertens hadn’t won a main draw matchup in WTA competition before she entered this event, though you’d never know if you saw her play this week. The Dutch youngster recorded a superb 6-3, 6-4 success against fifth seed Simona Halep on Friday, and is now amazingly just one win away from a maiden WTA title.
Pous-Tio holds a 2-1 head to head record against Bertens, and thrashed the 20-year-old the last time the pairing met on clay. That said, Bertens defeated the Spaniard in their most recent showdown, and she might just be feeling confident.
