Unseeded qualifier Philipp Petzschner takes on Belgian veteran Xavier Malisse in the semi-finals at the ATP UNICEF Open 2012 on Friday.
Petzschner, ranked 145th in the world, had entered the tournament on a seven-match losing streak that included first round exits in six tournaments. He required three wins in the qualifying draw of this competition to make it to the main draw before three more wins here helped him enter the semi-finals.
After defeating Dmitry Tursunov and having Mate Pavic retire from his match because of an injury, Petzschner surprised the world number 69, Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the quarter-final. The German won 6-4, 7-6.
Against him will be world number 95, Malisse, who has had three wins over players better ranked them him whole tournament. He started with two successive 7-6, 6-2 wins over Victor Troicki and Paolo Lorenzi before needing a three-setter against Gilles Muller in the quarter-final in the tournament.
The two haven’t played each other before this and this could be an interesting three-setter in the offing. Petzschner might just have a slight edge.
The Philipp Petzschner v Xavier Malisse match begins at 11 am at the Centre Court.
