Round two of the WTA Fes Open will bear witness to a battle of the Romanians between Simona Halep and Alexandra Cadantu on Wednesday. Both players have a bright future ahead of them, though it’s Halep who had made the biggest impression to date. The 20 year-old enters this tournament as the fifth seed, and she might just be in with an outside chance of claiming the first WTA title of her fledgling career.
Halep only had to play one set in round one, as wildcard entrant Fatima Zahrae El Allami was forced to pull out at 6-1 down due to a gastro intestinal illness. Halep should be feeling fresh and ready to take on her compatriot.
Cadantu needed three sets in the first round, but her 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 dismissal of defending champ Alberta Brianti will surely have turned a few heads. “The first set was close. I could have won it,” remarked Cadantu after the contest. “I played better and better after that. After losing early in my last few tournaments, this gives me a lot of confidence for my next match.”
Halep has a 1-0 head to head record against Cadantu after edging a third set tie-breaker in Bucharest last season. We could be in for another nail-biter here on Wednesday.
