The FIVB World Cup is an international qualification event for the Olympic Games for both men and women, which takes place in the year preceding the Games every four years.
12 teams compete and the tournament is organised into four rounds, with 66 matches played in total in a round-robin format.
The top three sides (if not yet qualified) earn places for the Olympics the following year.
The inaugural FIVB World Cup was held in 1965 (for men, 1973 for women) and was originally intended to fill the gap between the two most important volleyball tournaments on the calendar, the Olympic Games and the World Championship.
With the arrival of annual international events such as the World League and the Grand Prix though, that original purpose became invalid, so the competition instead was to be used as the first international Olympic qualification tournament.
The event takes place in Japan and of the twelve teams who participate, two are invited, whilst the other 10 must qualify. Japan is always pre-qualified as host nation.
The FIVB World Cup should not be confused with the FIVB World Championship or the FIVB World League/FIVB World Grand Prix.
